A Country Between the Himalayas and the Jungle
In 2025, I completed both the Manaslu Circuit and the Annapurna Circuit. Two of the most demanding and at the same time most beautiful trekking routes in the world. And yet Nepal is not just a destination for mountaineers.
That is exactly what makes this country so special: there is truly something here for everyone.
Nepal is one of the very few countries in the world where you can hike along one of the highest mountain trails on Earth and then find yourself on a jungle safari less than 48 hours later.
Mount Everest rises to 8,848 meters in the north, while the tropical Terai jungle stretches across the south. In between lie Kathmandu, Pokhara, Tibetan culture, Hindu temples, Buddhist monasteries, and a level of hospitality that is difficult to put into words.
Nepal is home to 8 of the world's 14 eight-thousanders, more than 80 ethnic groups, and national parks where tigers, elephants, and one-horned rhinoceroses roam freely.
For Hikers: From Beginner to Extreme
Beginner: Poon Hill Trek (4–5 Days)
The perfect introduction to trekking in Nepal.
No high-altitude camps, no extreme terrain, and no technical sections—just breathtaking views. Annapurna South, Dhaulagiri, and Machapuchare, the famous Fishtail Mountain, dominate the skyline. Sunrise from Poon Hill at 3,210 meters is one of the most photographed moments in Asia.
Intermediate: Langtang Valley Trek (11 Days, from €1,636)
The Langtang Valley north of Kathmandu is one of Nepal's most underrated trekking regions.
Dense forests, Tibetan-influenced villages, Gosaikunda Lake at 4,380 meters, and spectacular glacier scenery make this route a true hidden gem. It receives fewer visitors than Annapurna or Everest but is every bit as impressive.
Advanced: Manaslu Circuit (14–18 Days)
I completed it in 2025 — and I will never forget it.
The Manaslu Circuit is one of Nepal's most spectacular trekking routes. The trail passes through remote mountain villages, dramatic river gorges, and some of the most impressive Himalayan landscapes in the country. The highlight is crossing the Larkya La Pass at 5,160 meters.
Compared to the Everest and Annapurna regions, far fewer hikers venture here, giving the trek a much more authentic and remote atmosphere.
Extended Adventure: Manaslu Circuit Combined with Annapurna Highlights (17–18 Days)
My personal highlight of 2025.This route combines two of Nepal's most beautiful trekking regions into one unforgettable journey. After crossing the Larkya La Pass, the trail continues toward the Annapurna region.
As a result, you experience not only the remoteness of the Manaslu Circuit but also the spectacular mountain scenery that has made Annapurna famous worldwide.
More elevation gain, longer trekking days, and more challenging conditions make this one of the most rewarding trekking adventures in Nepal.
Legendary: Remote Regions of Nepal (10+ Days)
Those looking to experience Nepal beyond the well-known trekking routes will discover remote valleys, traditional mountain villages, and little-visited trails throughout the country.
Regions such as Dolpo, Nar Phu, Tsum Valley, and Kanchenjunga offer untouched landscapes, Tibetan-influenced culture, and the feeling of discovering a side of Nepal that few travelers ever see.
Getting there is often more challenging and the infrastructure is more basic, but the rewards are immense. Accommodation is usually far simpler than the established teahouse routes, making these journeys some of the most authentic Himalayan adventures available.
For Culture Lovers: Kathmandu and Pokhara
Kathmandu
Kathmandu is loud, chaotic, colorful, and fascinating all at once.
Pashupatinath, one of the most important Hindu pilgrimage sites in South Asia, sits directly on the banks of the Bagmati River. The enormous Boudhanath Stupa attracts Buddhist pilgrims from across the Himalayan world.
Between temples, prayer flags, and winding alleyways, Kathmandu creates an energy unlike anywhere else.
Pokhara
Situated on the shores of Phewa Lake and framed by views of Annapurna and Machapuchare, Pokhara offers a completely different atmosphere.
Lakeside cafés, paragliding, yoga, and relaxed walks make it the perfect contrast to Kathmandu. Most trekking adventures in Nepal either begin or end here.
For Wildlife Lovers: The Secret of the Terai
Chitwan National Park
Chitwan is Nepal's most famous wildlife reserve and one of Asia's greatest conservation success stories.
The population of the greater one-horned rhinoceros has recovered to more than 700 animals. Tigers, elephants, crocodiles, gharials, and countless bird species also inhabit the park.
Jeep safaris, jungle walks, and canoe trips along the Rapti River are among the most popular activities.
Bardia National Park: Nepal's Hidden Gem
Bardia in western Nepal is what Chitwan was decades ago: wild, remote, and almost untouched by mass tourism.
Tiger sightings are relatively common, rhinoceroses roam through the tall elephant grass, and the Babai River winds through pristine jungle landscapes.
