Thailand Beyond Phuket: 7 Islands We Would Choose Instead

Phuket is famous for a reason: it has excellent flight connections, a huge range of hotels and easy access to the Andaman Sea. But if your idea of Thailand is a little quieter, greener or more personal, we often look beyond Phuket itself. These seven islands each offer a different alternative.
1. Koh Yao Noi - for local rhythm and Phang Nga Bay views
Koh Yao Noi is one of our favourite choices for travellers who want to stay close to Phuket and Krabi without feeling surrounded by mass tourism. The island is compact, green and relaxed, with fishing villages, rubber plantations and views toward dramatic limestone formations.

2. Koh Yao Yai - for space and slower beaches
Its larger neighbour feels even more spread out. Koh Yao Yai works particularly well for travellers who value quiet resorts, long beach walks and days with very little agenda. It is not about nightlife or constant entertainment - that is precisely the point.
3. Koh Lanta - for an easygoing all-round island
Koh Lanta gives you a good middle ground: enough restaurants and services to be comfortable, but a slower atmosphere than Thailand’s biggest resort islands. Long beaches, sunsets and a laid-back rhythm make it especially good for couples and longer stays.

4. Koh Lipe - for clear water and a smaller island feel
Farther south, Koh Lipe is about the sea. The water can be spectacular, snorkelling is easily accessible and the island has the feeling of a compact tropical escape. Because getting there takes more effort, we prefer to include it when the itinerary has enough time to make the journey worthwhile.
5. Koh Samui - for comfort without giving up island life
Samui is not hidden, but it is a strong alternative when you want excellent hotels, restaurants, spas and direct air access. The key is choosing the right area. A well-selected base can give you a calm island stay while keeping everything convenient.

6. Koh Phangan - for hidden coves and a greener side of Thailand
Ignore the party stereotype. Much of Koh Phangan is peaceful and beautiful, with jungle-backed beaches, small cafes and wellness-focused stays. It is one of the islands we like most for travellers who want independence, atmosphere and a slower daily rhythm.

7. Koh Tao - for diving and snorkelling
If the underwater world is central to your trip, Koh Tao stands out. Diving and snorkelling shape the island experience, and it works especially well for active travellers who want their beach time to include plenty of time in the water.

Which island should you choose?
Choose Koh Yao Noi or Yai for quiet local atmosphere, Koh Lanta for balance, Koh Lipe for turquoise water, Koh Samui for comfort, Koh Phangan for character and Koh Tao for diving. Season matters too: the Gulf and Andaman coasts follow different weather patterns, so the best island in February may not be the best one in July.
We still use Phuket when it makes sense - especially as a gateway. The difference is that we do not assume the most famous island is automatically the right place to spend your holiday.
