Discover Khiva: A Journey into Central Asia’s Past

Khiva is a well-preserved city in Uzbekistan that transports visitors back to the Silk Road era. Its old town, Itchan Kala, is a UNESCO World Heritage site filled with stunning examples of Islamic architecture, vibrant bazaars, and centuries-old mosques and madrasahs.

A fairy tale of blues, golds, and history

Khiva feels like walking through a living history book. The old town is so well preserved that it often feels as if time has stood still. We spent several days exploring the city from every angle. In the morning, soft light bathes the turquoise tiles. At noon, the blue patterns glow vibrant and sharp. By evening, Khiva transforms into a warm golden palette over walls, domes, and minarets. The city changes its mood constantly, and we fell in love with it a little more every day.

A moment to remember

One evening, we found ourselves on a rooftop terrace overlooking the old town. The sun slowly sank behind the clay brick buildings as the colors softened. In front of us was a plate of Plov accompanied by local snacks like Samsa fresh from the tandoor, a tangy Achichuk salad, dried apricots, and regional nuts. The atmosphere was timeless, calm, and utterly captivating.

What Makes Khiva Special?

  • Historic Architecture: The city’s walls enclose a treasure trove of buildings dating from the 10th to the 19th centuries. The Kalta Minor Minaret, with its turquoise tiles, and the Kunya-Ark fortress are must-see landmarks.

  • Cultural Experience: Walking through Khiva’s narrow streets, you’ll encounter artisans crafting traditional ceramics and textiles, offering a glimpse into local life.

  • Silk Road Heritage: Khiva was a key stop on the Silk Road, making it a melting pot of cultures and trade. This history is visible in its architecture and museums.

  • Souvenirs: Khiva is a paradise for anyone who loves authentic crafts. The bazaars are full of intricate embroidery, beautiful fabrics, and lovingly made artisan pieces.

Practical Tips for Visiting Khiva

  • Best Time to Visit: Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to November) offer pleasant weather.

  • Local Cuisine: Try Uzbek dishes like plov (rice pilaf), shashlik (grilled meat), and non (traditional bread).

  • Guided Tours: Our agency provides knowledgeable guides who explain the history and significance of each site, enhancing your experience.

Our own Uzbekistan experience

In summer 2025, we explored Uzbekistan by train. Khiva, Bukhara, Samarkand – every city captivated us in its own way. Rich history, lively bazaars, welcoming people, and a country that offers so much more than you expect.
