━━ THE JOURNEY

Why this country left a lasting impression on us

DSC_5172.jpg

Raja Ampat is one of those places that leaves you amazed again and again, because something this beautiful should not really exist. Hundreds of green islands rise from turquoise water, and beneath them lies the richest marine world on Earth.

The moment you put your face in the water, you are in another world. Coral gardens in every colour, schools of fish parting around you and, with a little luck, a sea turtle gliding calmly past. You don't need a diving licence for any of this, just a mask, a snorkel and a little curiosity.

But Raja Ampat is more than water. In the rainforest of Waigeo, birds of paradise dance in the first light of morning, on Arborek you stay in the middle of a small Papuan village, and in the evening you sit on a wooden jetty while the sun sets behind the limestone islands.

We designed this journey so that you experience Raja Ampat in all its variety: a resort that protects its reefs, a guesthouse in the jungle, a small private island, a village and finally the quiet Fam Islands. Slowly, with plenty of time in the water and no rush at all.

BIRDS OF PARADISE

Before sunrise you stand at the display trees of Waigeo and watch the red bird-of-paradise dance. With a little luck, Wilson's bird-of-paradise appears too, found only here and on the neighbouring island of Batanta.

ISLAND HOPPING

The most famous view in Raja Ampat: mushroom-shaped karst islands in turquoise lagoons. Plus reefs that only few visitors ever get to see.

  • VISA:

Visa requirements differ depending on your nationality. We strongly recommend verifying the latest entry regulations with official immigration authorities before you travel.

  • RAJA AMPAT FEES:

Foreign visitors pay two fees in Raja Ampat: the marine park permit of IDR 1,000,000 (approx. €50), valid for one year, and a visitor levy of around IDR 1,000,000 (approx. €50). Together, these fees currently amount to approximately IDR 2,000,000 (€100) per person. Online registration is required in advance. You will find all the details in your Travel Guide Book.

  • CASH/ATM:

In Indonesia you pay in rupiah (IDR). There are ATMs in Sorong and Waisai, but none on the islands. Bring enough cash for the fees, tips and local excursions. Larger resorts often accept credit cards, frequently with a surcharge.

  • SNORKELLING & DIVING:

This journey is made for snorkellers, no diving licence is needed. You should, however, be a confident swimmer. A mask of your own that fits well makes a big difference. If you dive, you can add dives at several of the places you stay.

  • BOAT TRIPS:

Raja Ampat is a world of islands, so you will often travel by speedboat. Some rides take two to three hours and can be wet and bumpy depending on wind and waves. Pack valuables in waterproof bags. In bad weather, the programme may need to be adjusted.

  • HEALTH:

Raja Ampat lies in a malaria area. Get travel medical advice before your trip and bring good insect repellent. Medical care on the islands is basic, which makes travel insurance with medical evacuation especially important.

  • REFF PROTECTION:

Please use reef-safe sunscreen and never touch the corals while snorkelling. That way the reefs of Raja Ampat stay as beautiful for the next guests as you experienced them.

  • CANCELLATION, REFUNDS & TRAVEL INSURANCE:

Once bookings have been confirmed, all cancellations will follow the terms and conditions of our local suppliers and service providers. Please note that many partners require advance payments to secure availability, and their refund policies may vary. We will always do our best to recover any refundable amounts wherever possible, but some services may be fully non-refundable depending on supplier conditions.

We strongly recommend that all travelers purchase comprehensive travel insurance covering trip cancellations, medical emergencies, and unexpected changes. This ensures peace of mind and financial protection in the event of unforeseen circumstances.

You’ll receive a comprehensive Travel Guide Book in PDF format with all your confirmed bookings, key travel information, and a personalized day-by-day itinerary designed specifically for you.

The guide also includes practical tips to help your trip go smoothly, along with must-see locations, local eateries, hand-picked café recommendations we have personally tried and loved.

We will even connect you with reliable local taxi drivers, guides, and companies we have met during our own travels and fully trust.

Raja Ampat lies right on the equator, so it is warm all year round, usually around 30°C (86°F) during the day. The water is a pleasant 27 to 30°C (81 to 86°F). The best time to visit is from October to April. The sea is usually calm, boat rides are comfortable and underwater visibility is often excellent.

From June to September a strong southeast wind blows more often and the sea can get rougher. Some boat rides then take longer or are postponed.

It rains throughout the year, usually as a short, heavy shower. The sun often comes back out quickly afterwards.

Overall, October to April are the best months for Raja Ampat.

SIM cards are available at the airport in Jakarta. Telkomsel is the best choice, as its network reaches furthest in Raja Ampat. You will need your passport. In Waisai and on some islands you have a signal, but often not in remote areas. Many resorts have Wi-Fi, while at the homestay and in the rainforest you will mostly be offline. Enjoy the time without your phone, it is part of the experience.

If you prefer not to buy a physical SIM card, I recommend using an eSIM from Airalo. You'll find more detailed information about this option in my Travel Guide Book, including a 10% discount on their services.
