━━ THE JOURNEY

Why this country left a lasting impression on us

DSC_5172.jpg

Malaysia is a country that unfolds its beauty layer by layer, a seamless blend of elegance, culture, and nature that reveals something new every day. What moves us most is its diversity.

Every part of Malaysia feels like a dialogue between worlds, Malay, Chinese, and Indian influences woven together into something uniquely harmonious. And, of course, the cuisine is simply unforgettable. Whether it’s a refined dinner with skyline views in Kuala Lumpur or fresh seafood by the beach, every dish feels like an invitation to explore.

But nothing touched us quite like our journey into Borneo’s pristine wilderness. Staying at the Borneo Rainforest Lodge in Danum Valley was an experience unlike any other, waking up to the sounds of the jungle, spotting orangutans swinging through ancient trees, and feeling the rare stillness that only nature untouched can offer. It’s one of those moments where you realize luxury isn’t always marble and chandeliers, sometimes, it’s the privilege of being completely immersed in the wild.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
  • PLAN AHEAD:

Borneo’s limited facilities and high demand mean availability fills quickly. For the best choice of lodges and experiences, we strongly advise booking 7–9 months in advance.

  • INTERNATIONAL FLIGHT:

International flights can be arranged upon request, subject to availability. A 10% service fee will apply to cover handling and booking costs.

  • VISA:

Visa requirements differ depending on your nationality. We strongly recommend verifying the latest entry regulations with official immigration authorities before you travel.

  • CASH/ATM:

Malaysia is generally more card-friendly than many neighboring countries, though cash is still useful in certain situations.

In Malaysia, credit and debit cards are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, and shopping centers, especially in major cities like Kuala Lumpur and Penang. However, cash remains important in local markets, hawker stalls, and rural areas, particularly on islands such as the Perhentians and Borneo, where many guesthouses, dive centers, and small eateries operate on a cash-only basis, and ATMs are limited.

  • GUIDED TOURS:

Guided tours are typically conducted on a shared basis, meaning other travelers may join the same experience. This allows you to meet other guests and share the activity as part of a small group.

If a private tour is included or available as an upgrade, it will be clearly indicated in your itinerary or can be arranged upon request (subject to availability and additional cost).

  • CANCELLATION, REFUNDS & TRAVEL INSURANCE:

Once bookings have been confirmed, all cancellations will follow the terms and conditions of our local suppliers and service providers. Please note that many partners require advance payments to secure availability, and their refund policies may vary. We will always do our best to recover any refundable amounts wherever possible, but some services may be fully non-refundable depending on supplier conditions.

We strongly recommend that all travelers purchase comprehensive travel insurance covering trip cancellations, medical emergencies, and unexpected changes. This ensures peace of mind and financial protection in the event of unforeseen circumstances.

TRAVEL GUIDE BOOK

You’ll receive a comprehensive Travel Guide Book in PDF format with all your confirmed bookings, key travel information, and a personalized day-by-day itinerary designed specifically for you.

The guide also includes practical tips to help your trip go smoothly, along with must-see locations, local eateries, hand-picked café recommendations we have personally tried and loved.

We will even connect you with reliable local taxi drivers, guides, and companies we have met during our own travels and fully trust.

WEATHER

The best time to visit Malaysia is from March to October, when the weather is generally warm, sunny, and pleasant across most destinations. This period offers ideal conditions for sightseeing, cultural exploration, and relaxing on the beach.

While Kuala Lumpur and Penang can experience brief tropical showers year-round, they are typically short and followed by sunshine. The Perhentian Islands are at their best between March and October, with calm seas perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and diving; most resorts close during the monsoon season from November to February.

For Borneo, the best balance of clear weather, comfort, and wildlife activity, plan your visit between March and October. But if you want to see the rainforest at its most lush and alive, the wet season also has its own wild charm.

INTERNET & SIM CARDS

SIM cards are available almost everywhere in Malaysia, including directly at the airport upon arrival. If you prefer not to buy a physical SIM card, I recommend using an eSIM from Airalo — you’ll find more detailed information about this option, along with a 10% discount, in my Travel Guide Book.

Within Danum Valley, however, mobile connection is extremely limited or nearly non-existent due to the remote jungle environment. At the Borneo Rainforest Lodge, guests can still enjoy basic internet access in the main lodge restaurant and rest area, thanks to Starlink satellite connectivity. This allows you to stay in touch or share a few highlights of your journey, though speeds can vary and streaming or heavy uploads are not recommended.
