You’ll travel as part of a small group, following a thoughtfully curated itinerary that blends comfort, adventure, and cultural immersion.

Every detail, from transfers and accommodations to guided experiences, has been carefully planned, allowing you to relax and enjoy the journey without worrying about logistics. Some moments are purposefully left open, giving you the freedom to explore, connect, or simply soak in your surroundings. Our travel guide, inspired by our own experiences, offers tips and personal recommendations to help you make the most of each destination.

WHY WE LOVE MONGOLIA

Inspired by our own journey through Mongolia, this 16-day wilderness expedition takes you deep into the country’s untamed north. Spend 8 unforgettable days on horseback, riding along the shores of Lake Khovsgol, through ancient forests, and across mountain passes above 1,500 m. Evenings are spent beneath vast starry skies, gathered around the campfire, sharing stories and the quiet magic of the steppe.

We fell in love with Lake Khovsgol for its sense of pure serenity, a vast expanse of crystal-blue water framed by pine-covered hills and endless open skies. Life here moves at nature’s rhythm, untouched and timeless. It’s a place that invites you to slow down, breathe deeply, and feel completely connected to the wilderness around you.

You’ll stay in tents and traditional gers, guided by an experienced Mongolian team with wranglers, a support vehicle, and a camp cook. Along the way, meet Tsaatan reindeer herders and nomadic families whose lives remain deeply tied to the land — a true immersion into Mongolia’s wild soul.

Day 1 - Ancient Volcanoes
Your guide will pick you up from Ulaanbaatar airport or train station. You can check in, relax and meet your fellow travelers. Today there is the option to be part of a leisurely city tour starting with Gandan Buddhist Monastery that is just round the corner from the hotel.

Day 2
We take the only road North to Erdenet, Mongolia’s third largest city with a population of 97,000. The road is paved but “rugged”, and we can enjoy the impressive Mongolian scenery. The vast landscapes and infinite horizons give you a sense of just how immense this country is.

Day 3
A short moderate to challenging hike up one of the sacred and extinct volcanoes of Uran and Tulga National Park. The volcanoes hold spiritual significance to local shamans and it is tradition to walk clockwise around the ring summit. Enjoy the spectacular views of the surrounding landscape before we complete the final leg of our drive North to Mörön, the province capital of Khovsgol.

Sleeping: Hotel / Ger Camps
Meals: Restaurant

Day 4 - Horse trekking by Lake Khovsgol
A ride to remember. In the remote village of Hatgal, located on the southern tip of the dazzling lake Khovsgol – known as the blue pearl of Asia we meet our nomadic guides. After some introductions and tea our guides will introduce us to the horses and we will saddle up for the spectacular ride to our first campsite on the shores of the lake. Over the next few days we will ride through mountain meadows, green woodlands and mountain passes as we explore Khovsgol’s breathtaking wilderness.

Day 5 - Horse trekking by Lake Khovsgol
The shores of the blue pearl. This is a good day to get comfortable in the saddle. The terrain is varied with open meadows and sparse green woodland. As we ride past the last signs of civilisation we can relax on the shores of the lake skimming stones and taking in the majestic beauty of nature.

Day 6 - Horse trekking by Lake Khovsgol
The wild places of the world. The most amazing day of riding. The scenery only gets more spectacular as we ride between the shores of the lake and the foothills of towering mountains. Wild flower meadows become abundant and many streams flow down from the mountains as we discover a paradise of natural sacred places.

Sleeping: Wild camping
Meals: Cooked on fire

Day 7 - Horse trekking in the mountains
From the lake through the mountains. Our journey takes us away from the shores of the lake, meandering through mountain passes and into lush green valleys with fresh flowing streams and tall trees. These ancient paths have been travelled for generations and you will feel the excitement of adventure stirring.

Day 8 - Horse trekking in the mountains
Exploring peaceful river valleys. The terrain opens up into wider valleys with rolling mountains all around. It’s a day for taking in the majestic beauty and tranquillity of this natural and unchanging landscape.

Day 9 - Horse trekking in the mountains
Riding onto plains. As we descend from the mountains into a vast grassland steppe the remote village of Renchklumb appears in the distance. At the village we are greeted by the local wrestling champion ‘Amartuvshin’ and his family who give us a tour of their home and village.

Sleeping: Wild camping & Homestays
Meals: Cooked on fire

Day 10 - The Tsataan Reindeer Herders
Exploring the mountain plains & an exclusive film viewing. Spending the morning with Amartuvshin we have the opportunity to learn about Mongolian wrestling and take a look around the village. In the afternoon we drive to another village further North and meet a local filmmaker. He will show us two short documentaries on the Tsataan reindeer herders that he made in the 80s with some very retro kit.

Day 11 - The Tsataan Reindeer Herders
The path to an ancient tribe. In Khovsgol’s high mountain plateaus the Tsaatan reindeer herders are believed to practice the oldest form of shamanism on Earth. They are skilled craftspeople and often trade with the local villages. To reach the Tsataan we will must meet with one of the herders at the foot of the mountains. He will lead us on horse back up in the mountains and to the Tsataan’s camp.

Day 12 - The Tsataan Reindeer Herders
Reindeer riding and other traditional skills. Today the Tsaatan will teach us about their unique way of life including showing us how to ride a reindeer. The high mountains are too cold for horses in the winter so the Tsataan train the reindeer for riding so they can get around & keep up with their herds.

Sleeping: Homestay & Tepees
Meals: Cooked by Host on fire

Day 13 - Return through the Mountains
Taking the scenic route. On our return journey to Hatgal we take the opportunity to explore yet more of Khovsgol’s speculator scenery by setting out in off-road vehicles through the mountains. The wildflower meadows here are a sea of colour and the landscape is like something out of a dream. Its the perfect place to take some incredible photos and go for a pleasant stroll with your fellow travellers as we pick out the perfect place to camp for the night.

Day 14 - Return through the Mountains
High mountain passes and spectacular views. As we navigate the high passes there are spectacular views of the valleys below. We are in no rush and you have the opportunity to stop and take short walks whilst enjoying the beautiful scenery before returning to Hatgal and picking up the road to Mörön.

Days 15/16 - Return through the Mountains
The journey home. After such an incredible adventure to some beautiful remote places it is time to return to Ulaanbaatar. From Mörön it is a 10 hour drive on paved roads and we will split this over two days allowing us to enjoy our last few days in the country. Once back in Ulaanbaatar you have time to relax at the hotel before meeting that evening in one of the capitals bustling restaurants to celebrate our incredible journey together.

Sleeping: Wild camping, Ger camps & Hotel
Meals: Cooked on fire & Restaurant

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
  • INTERNATIONAL FLIGHT:

International flights can be arranged upon request, subject to availability. A 10% service fee will apply to cover handling and booking costs.

  • VISA:

Visa requirements differ depending on your nationality. We strongly recommend verifying the latest entry regulations with official immigration authorities before you travel. Roxy Travel Plan can provide general guidance or advice upon request; however, we cannot take responsibility for visa approvals, rejections, or changes in immigration policies.

  • CASH/ATM:

Mongolia is still largely a cash-based country, especially outside the capital. In Ulaanbaatar, ATMs are widely available and most hotels, restaurants, and larger shops accept credit or debit cards. However, once you venture into rural areas — particularly during expeditions around Lake Khovsgol, the Orkhon Valley, or the Gobi Desert — cash becomes essential. Many guesthouses, local eateries, and small vendors operate on a cash-only basis, and ATMs are scarce or nonexistent. It’s best to withdraw sufficient Mongolian Tugrik (MNT) before leaving the city and carry small notes for everyday purchases or tips.

  • CANCELLATION, REFUNDS & TRAVEL INSURANCE:

Once bookings have been confirmed, all cancellations will follow the terms and conditions of our local suppliers and service providers. Please note that many partners require advance payments to secure availability, and their refund policies may vary. We will always do our best to recover any refundable amounts wherever possible, but some services may be fully non-refundable depending on supplier conditions.

We strongly recommend that all travelers purchase comprehensive travel insurance covering trip cancellations, medical emergencies, and unexpected changes. This ensures peace of mind and financial protection in the event of unforeseen circumstances.

MONGOLIA SPECIFIC INFORMATION
  • WILD CAMPING:

On this extraordinary journey, we’ll venture deep into Mongolia’s most remote and untouched regions—where wild camping isn’t just part of the experience, but a true highlight. Thanks to Mongolia’s "right to roam," we can pitch our tents wherever the views are most breathtaking. With virtually no light pollution, clear skies, and elevations above 1500m, it’s a stargazer’s paradise.

As night falls, gather around a crackling campfire, where our camp chef will prepare delicious meals beneath the open sky. Share stories with fellow adventurers, watch the Milky Way stretch across the heavens, and drift off to sleep to the sounds of the wild. Tents are provided but for the full experience, we recommend bringing your own sleeping bag or roll mat.

  • STAYING WILD:

In the vast and untamed Mongolian countryside, modern comforts give way to authenticity and that’s part of the magic. We live simply, drawing fresh water from rivers and lakes for washing. It can be heated over the fire for a warm rinse or even used for a quick laundry wash. Feel like a dip? Go ahead! Just remember to use only biodegradable, eco-friendly soaps to protect these pristine waters.

Many lakes and rivers here are so clean, they meet UK drinking water standards but we recommend boiling or filtering any water you drink. Bottled water will also be available throughout the tour to keep you safe and hydrated.

  • RIDING EXPERIENCE:

This journey leads you through breathtakingly varied terrain from gentle lakeside meadows to hidden mountain trails and high alpine passes. Never ridden before? No worries. All you need is a sense of adventure and a willingness to try. Our skilled nomadic guides will ride alongside you, offering support and sharing their deep knowledge of the land and horses. Each day, we’ll cover 20–30 km over about six hours a comfortable pace for beginners. If you need a break, a support vehicle is always nearby. For experienced riders, there are plenty of chances to break away, canter through the open landscape, and explore deeper into Mongolia’s wild beauty with an extra guide by your side.

  • FOOD & DRIVING:

Please note: While we provide hearty and filling meals throughout the journey, some dishes may be simpler due to the remoteness of the region. Vegetarian options are available upon request, though choices may be more limited given the logistical challenges of sourcing fresh produce in rural Mongolia.

Please be aware that travel times in Mongolia can be long, and some roads are unpaved or rugged. Extended days spent in vehicles are sometimes unavoidable due to the vast distances and the nature of the terrain. This is part of the authentic experience of exploring Mongolia’s remote wilderness.

WEATHER

June marks the start of summer in Mongolia, one of the best times to visit the country.

Days are generally warm and sunny, with average temperatures ranging from 20°C to 25°C in Ulaanbaatar and central regions, while the Gobi Desert can reach 30°C or higher. In the north and at higher altitudes, such as around Lake Khovsgol, temperatures are cooler — often between 10°C and 20°C, especially in the mornings and evenings.

Occasional showers or thunderstorms can occur, bringing freshness to the landscape and helping wildflowers bloom across the steppes.

Overall, June offers long daylight hours, clear skies, and vibrant green scenery, making it ideal for outdoor adventures, horseback riding, and cultural festivals.

INTERNET & SIM CARDS

SIM cards are available almost everywhere in Mongolia, including directly at the airport upon arrival. If you prefer not to purchase a physical SIM card, you can easily use an eSIM from Airalo — you’ll find more details and a 10% discount in our Travel Guide Book.

During the horseback expedition around Lake Khovsgol, network coverage is extremely limited or often nonexistent. This remote region offers a rare chance to fully disconnect, leaving behind screens and signals to reconnect instead with the silence of nature, the rhythm of your horse, and the vast beauty of Mongolia’s wilderness.
