━━ THE JOURNEY

Why this country left a lasting impression on us

DSC_5172.jpg

We first entered Cambodia along the Mekong, travelling through small villages before reaching the bigger towns. Looking back, this shaped the way we experienced the country.

In those villages, we spoke with local people about everyday life, change and the history their families had lived through. Even in the mid-2000s, only around 6% of rural households had access to electricity.

Hearing these stories directly made me realise how little I had known about Cambodia before travelling there. Once you begin to understand what so many families experienced during years of war and instability, the country feels very different. Their openness, kindness and warmth touched me deeply.

Of course, Angkor Wat is extraordinary. But for us, Cambodia became much more than its temples.

What stayed with me most were the people, their stories and the way this country makes you think about history, change and resilience.

  • VISA:

Visa requirements differ depending on your nationality. We strongly recommend verifying the latest entry regulations with official immigration authorities before you travel.

Travellers from Germany, Austria and Switzerland need a visa for Cambodia. The easiest way is to apply in good time for an e-visa via the official portal.

  • CASH/ATM:

In Cambodia you can pay with US dollars almost everywhere, and change under one dollar is given in Cambodian riel. Bring clean, undamaged dollar bills, as torn or very worn notes are often refused.

ATMs are easy to find in Siem Reap, Battambang, Phnom Penh and Kampot. Most dispense US dollars but charge a fee per withdrawal. Larger hotels and restaurants accept cards, often with a small surcharge. There are only a few ATMs on Koh Rong, so make sure you withdraw enough cash beforehand.

All tours on this journey are private. Your English-speaking guide and your driver are there just for you, so you set the pace and can stay longer wherever you like. A German-speaking guide is available on request (subject to availability and possible extra costs).

  • DRESS CODE AT TEMPLES:

At Angkor Wat, the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh and many pagodas, shoulders and knees must be covered. A light scarf or thin long trousers in your daypack are ideal.

Please note that many partners require advance payments to secure availability, and their refund policies may vary. We will always do our best to recover any refundable amounts wherever possible, but some services may be fully non-refundable depending on supplier conditions.

We strongly recommend that all travelers purchase comprehensive travel insurance covering trip cancellations, medical emergencies, and unexpected changes. This ensures peace of mind and financial protection in the event of unforeseen circumstances.

You’ll receive a comprehensive Travel Guide Book in PDF format with all your confirmed bookings, key travel information, and a personalized day-by-day itinerary designed specifically for you.

The guide also includes practical tips to help your trip go smoothly, along with must-see locations, local eateries, hand-picked café recommendations we have personally tried and loved.

We will even connect you with reliable local taxi drivers, guides, and companies we have met during our own travels and fully trust.

The best time to visit Cambodia is from November to March, when it is dry and pleasantly warm. November to January is especially beautiful: temperatures are comfortable, the countryside is still lush and green after the rainy season and the morning light over Angkor Wat is magical.

From March to May it gets really hot, often above 35°C (95°F). Plan your sightseeing for early mornings and late afternoons and spend the midday heat by the pool.

The rainy season lasts roughly from May to October. Most days bring a short, heavy shower in the afternoon, often followed by sunshine. The landscape glows green, the temples are quieter and the Tonlé Sap is at high water. The sea can get rougher during these months, so boat crossings to Koh Rong are occasionally postponed.

Overall, November to March are the best months to combine Angkor, rural Cambodia and the islands.

SIM cards are available almost everywhere, including directly at the airport upon arrival.

If you prefer not to buy a physical SIM card, I recommend using an eSIM from Airalo you’ll find more detailed information about this option in my Travel Guide Book including a 10% discount on their services.
